We have been taught that others give us permission for what we want. Many of us do not believe we have the right to ask for what we need. Instead, we learned that getting what we want is the product of manipulation or that the other person “should” know by some form of mind reading.
We have been taught to expect others to figure it out, rather than to ask directly. Saying inside: “How could they not know?”; This should be obvious, but they never seem to get it?”; “Why won’t they get it?”; or something of the like. Not only have we been taught not to ask, but also we realize that asking is vulnerable and therefore we would rather not have to ask.
Interestingly, most of us have resistance to being manipulated, yet, fail to realize the ways in which we manipulate as a result of our programming. It is just “how things are” or “the way things are done.”
Sometimes this is in large ways, sometimes it is in very small ways. But size is less relevant than what the programming reveals to us.
Indeed, the invitation is to give ourselves permission to have needs and wants. And then, the invitation is to also give ourselves permission to ask for what we need. This can be very challenging, especially for nurturers, caretakers, people pleasers, perfectionists, and more.
Giving ourselves permission asks us to be brave.
It also asks us to be willing to give to ourselves.
Are you willing to give to yourself what you are seeking from other people?
Do you know what you are really seeking?
Are you willing to ask for what you need?
Are you judging yourself for having wants or needs?
What is playing out under the surface tension within you?
Additionally, are you willing to be clear about your boundaries?
Are you willing to be clear about what you are and are not willing to do for someone?
Are you willing to let go of feelings of obligation and duty?
Are you willing to put yourself first so that you may show up more fully?
What arises for you as you consider these questions and the experiences in your life?
Most importantly, this reflection asks us to then give ourselves permission to receive. Spirit can have everything before us on a “silver platter” yet, if we are not willing to receive, it will not reach us.
Giving ourselves permission, asking, and opening to receive are part of reclaiming our sovereignty and stepping into our power. This is all part of the experience of freedom that we seek. And it starts within.
And so it is.

Today’s card is from the Postcards from Spirit Oracle Deck, by Colette Baron-Reid. It says:
“Dearest You,
We’re a chatty bunch over here, always talking about how to support you in your life’s journey. We communicate to you thorugh the language of oracles, dreams, signs, metaphors and omens. In your life on earth, however, clarity in your communication is essential to being understood. You don’t speak in symbols, and if you did, you would definitely confuse things.
Right now you’re facing a situation in which you’re bieng asked to have integrity, to be clear, and learn how to ask for your needs to be met. The first step is to admit out loud that you have needs! The second is to ask out loud for them to be met. And the third is to allow the other person, organization, or even us to answer you. When you follow these steps, you can most definitely expect an answer. In your favor? Affirmative, we say!
Loving you so very much . . . “
